Designing With AI Without Losing Authorship

We are asked about our use of AI constantly, usually in a tone that expects either a sales pitch or a confession. The honest answer is less dramatic than either. The tools have changed where our time goes; they have not changed who is responsible for the work. Here is where they sit, what they touch, and the decisions we keep firmly in human hands.

Speed is not the point

The temptation with generative tools is to treat them as a speed dial — more variations, faster turnaround, cheaper drafts. That framing misses what actually moves work forward. Producing a competent-looking option is now nearly free, and nearly free reshapes the discipline: the scarce resource is no longer production, it is judgement. Speed only matters if it buys more iterations on the decisions that count — composition, restraint, the moment a system clicks into coherence. We use the tools upstream of the decision, to widen the field and reach the interesting problems sooner, never in place of the decision itself.

Authorship stays human

Across our immersive and AI-driven work — the Existence platform, the experiences we built for the National Center for Wildlife — the constant is that the studio still owns the judgement. The tools widen the field of possibility; the work of narrowing it back down to a single, confident answer remains a human act, and it is the part clients are actually paying for. A wall of plausible options is not a deliverable. The deliverable is the one option we can stand behind and explain.

What we refuse to fake

Speed is never an excuse to ship the generic. If a tool gets us a competent-but-empty result faster, that is just a faster way to the wrong place. We treat every output as a draft to argue with, not an answer to accept, and we hold AI-assisted work to the same standard as anything else that leaves the studio: it has to be specific, it has to be considered, and it has to be ours. The process moves faster than it used to. The standard has not moved at all.
